Losing over 100 pounds is an incredible accomplishment that transforms the body. However, losing a significant amount of weight can lead to loose, excess skin that masks new curves and muscles. Dr. Dana Khuthaila, a plastic surgeon in New York City, performs after weight loss surgery to help patients fully enjoy their new body. After weight loss surgery removes excess skin and Dr. Khuthaila tightens the underlying tissues and muscles before re-draping the skin. Each after weight loss surgery is tailored to meet the specific needs of the patient, but patients should be at a healthy, stable weight before the procedure for best results.
"22 Year Old Unhappy with Profile of the Nose - I always felt that my profile was missing something but I didn't know what I wanted to correct. I realized after taking countless profile selfies that the tip of my nose was lacking perky-ness (If that any makes sense). I've thought about having a rhinoplasty to correct it but I didn't want to break my nose in the process being that all I wanted was structure to the tip. Dr.Khuthaila recommended we try a non surgical temporary treatment and we proceed from there. I was amazed with how quickly and instantly the results were! My nose has the perfect uplift I was looking for and she saved me from going under the knife when it truly was not necessary. The result is exactly what I wanted and I cannot thank her enough for all her help and support. <3 "- S. / RealSelf / Apr 06, 2017

"Breasts I Always Dreamed Of! - New York, NY - I always had very large and low drooping breasts that I was self conscious about and hurt all the time. After years of debating what I should do about them, being too scared, and countless consultations if found Dr. Khuthaila. I'm so happy I did! She listened to everything I had to say and made me feel really comfortable. She recommended that a lift with some reduction and liposuction of the..."- J. / RealSelf / May 27, 2017
"WHAT A SURGEON! LOVED MY EXPERIENCE and RESULTS <3 - I don't know why it has taken me 3 years to write this review...but better late than never! Dr. Khuthaila and team are amazing. I went in for BA about 3 years ago and from the moment I met Dr. K at the consultation, I immediately felt at ease. Dr. K was the 2nd MD visit on my list of 5 and the only female surgeon. Not to gear this into some feminist rant, but compared to the other surgeons,..."- K. / RealSelf / May 23, 2017
"I recently underwent a double mastectomy with DTI reconstruction with Dr. Khuthaila. After seeing several plastic surgeons I selected her to be the one. I could not be happier to have been in her care for the surgery. Dr. Khuthaila is absolutely amazing. From the very first consultation, her knowledge in the field and her passion for her work, were clear. She listened to my concerns and answered all questions with patience and clarity. She never made me feel rushed, on the contrary, she has the ability of calming down any fear one may have. She walked me through each step of the procedure and held my hand along the way. She may be one of the last doctors that, not only, is extremely skilled but also has a heart and truly cares about her patients.Last but not least her staff is great, extremely professional and kind."- V.B. / Google / May 22, 2017
Weight loss patients will consider after weight loss surgery to correct or enhance one or more of the following conditions:
- Deflated and sagging breasts with nipples that point downward
- Loose and hanging skin on the abdomen
- Excess skin and pockets of fat on the hips
- Excess and deflated skin on and under the buttocks
- Loose and hanging skin around the knees and inner thighs
- Hanging skin on the underside of the arms (“bat wings”)
- Loose and hanging skin on the neck (“turkey neck”)
The goal of after weight loss surgery is to reduce the amount of loose skin that collects and hangs on the body and to lift the body part, so it appears tighter. Multiple areas of the body may need to be addressed, depending on the needs of each patient. Most surgeons will group body parts together and stage them multiple surgeries. Doing so helps reduce the risk of complications, such as blood loss and infection. Examples of this grouping include:
- Upper body (Liposuction, breast lift, tummy tuck, arm lift)
- Lower body (Liposuction, butt lift, thigh lift, lower body lift)
After weight loss surgery is performed under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical facility. Patients are usually required to spend the night in the hospital so they can be monitored. The recovery following this surgery can be a slow process. While the post-surgical results can be life-changing for many weight loss patients, scarring is an unfortunate part of this process. Every attempt is made during surgery to minimize scarring as much as possible. Patients should adhere to a healthy lifestyle so that the results achieved through surgery are not compromised.

After Weight Loss Surgery FAQs
Common Body Parts?
Common body parts that may need skin reduction surgery include the abdomen, buttocks, upper thighs, breasts, arms and neck. The breasts and abdomen are among two of the most popular areas addressed. A large majority of individuals will address the breasts (with a breast lift), and the tummy (with a tummy tuck) in a single surgery. As you lose weight, you will notice which areas are most concerning, and you can begin discussing cosmetic surgery with your plastic surgeon.
Most plastic surgeons require patients to be at or near their goal weight before moving forward with this surgery. However, this isn’t always the case. Sometimes, removing the loose skin is all it takes to accelerate the loss of the final pounds—especially if the loose skin is getting in the way of exercise and mobility.
Will Insurance Cover the Cost?
In most cases, no.Insurance companies consider this surgery to be cosmetic, and they usually do not cover any of the surgical expenses. However, each surgical case is different and may have a special circumstance. Our billing coordinator works to provide accurate estimates and thoroughly checks the benefits of each provider.
